How to Auto-tag Customers in Shopify?

Customer tags in Shopify help in better segmentation based on a customer’s purchase history, location, or interests.

I will show you how to add customer tags in Shopify automatically. 

What are Customer Tags in Shopify?

Customer tags are descriptive labels that segment customers based on preferences, interests, or characteristics. 

Some popular Shopify customer tags are: 

  • VIP
  • Wholesaler 
  • New Customers 
  • & more 

Shopify’s default functionality allows you to add these tags, which is time-consuming manually. You will need to open each customer and manually assign a tag in the Tags section.

To overcome this process, the Shopify Flow app provides automated tagging based on defined conditions.

For example, customers who spend over $5,000 can automatically be tagged as a “VIP.”

Once tagged, these VIP customers can be targeted with newsletters or marketing emails during a product launch.

How to Use Shopify Flow to Auto-Tag Customers?

Follow these steps to auto-tag customers in Shopify:

  • Step 1: Install the Shopify Flow App
  • Step 2: Create a New Workflow
  • Step 3: Define Conditions & Action to Tag Customer
  • Step 4: Test the Workflow

Step 1: Install the Shopify Flow App

Head to the Shopify app store and install the Shopify Flow app. It is completely free to use.

Step 2: Create a New Workflow 

Now go to your Shopify Admin > Apps > Shopify Flow app. Then, click on Create workflow.

Then, click Select a trigger button.

Step 3: Define Conditions & Action to Tag Customer

Now, you will see workflow creation dashboard like this one.

You will have set a specific condition and an action for the flow to trigger.  

For example, this is our flow 1 to assign a customer tag “Regular Customer” if the customer orders for more than five times.

This is flow 2 to assign a customer tag “Indian Customer” if the customer shipping address country is India.

Step 4: Test the Workflow

After setting the workflow, test them to check if they are working as expected.

And that’s it! You have successfully automated customers in shopify
