Customer tags in Shopify help in better segmentation based on a customer’s purchase history, location, or interests.
I will show you how to add customer tags in Shopify automatically.
What are Customer Tags in Shopify?
Customer tags are descriptive labels that segment customers based on preferences, interests, or characteristics.
Some popular Shopify customer tags are:
- VIP
- Wholesaler
- New Customers
- & more
Shopify’s default functionality allows you to add these tags, which is time-consuming manually. You will need to open each customer and manually assign a tag in the Tags section.

To overcome this process, the Shopify Flow app provides automated tagging based on defined conditions.
For example, customers who spend over $5,000 can automatically be tagged as a “VIP.”
Once tagged, these VIP customers can be targeted with newsletters or marketing emails during a product launch.
