  • The average consumer budgeted $620 specifically for holiday gifts in 2023. 
  • Americans planned to spend an average of $170 on gift cards in 2023. 
  • Shoppers were expected to spend an average of $1,638 on gifts, travel, and entertainment in 2024, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. 
  • Online holiday sales worldwide reached $209.7 billion between November and December, with U.S. consumers contributing significantly. 

United Kingdom Christmas Spending Statistics

While the U.S. shoppers love gift cards, the UK shoppers are early buyers.

69% of UK consumers start to shop for the festive season by August itself. By September, this figure rises to 77%, and by October, 85% of Brits have already begun their holiday shopping.

Comparatively, 63% of Brits start shopping before July, while only 13% of U.S. shoppers start shopping early.

That means in July 6 out of 10 people in the UK are already shopping while in the USA it is roughly 1. Make it essential for businesses targeting the UK to start their holiday campaigns early.

  • The UK was expected to lead Christmas spending across Europe, with projections nearing €100 billion in retail sales. 
  • UK households anticipated spending an average of £596 on presents. 
  • During Black Friday/Cyber Monday, the British spent $4.6 billion online, marking a 5.2% year-on-year increase. 
  • 51% of UK consumers prefer physical stores for a traditional festive experience.

And Millennials aged 30-44 are the biggest spenders, allocating 65.4% more to décor and food and 44.3% more to experiences than other age groups.

  • Smartphone usage for Christmas gift purchases increased by 11% in the last two years. 
  • Retailers anticipate that about 17% of holiday sales will be returned. 
  • Americans spend an average of $559 on their loved ones for Christmas.

  • 70% of consumers prioritize mobile payment options, while 68% emphasize the importance of brand apps for convenience.
